Competitions:
As our name indicates, this is going to be
a showdown between Colleges & Univiersities.
Although Swing Dancing is mostly a social dance.
We want people to be able to show off. e have
a few different events planned for the weekend
that will allow you to do that.
All Varsity Award:
Thoughout Friday & Saturday we will be
taking nominations for the All-Varsity Award.
This award is designed to recognize the contributions
of a Swing Club and the impact they have on
the college campus and its students. The All-Varsity
Award is designed to recognize College and University
Swing Clubs and show that their efforts and
dedication is not going unnoticed. Anybody can
nominate a club for this award. Nomination forms
are available at the registration desk.
Jill & Jack's:
We did not get confused and type it backwards.
The Jill & Jack competitions (similar to
Jack & Jill's) is when the ladies will lead
the gentleman. The re is no fee to enter this
competition. The winners will be decided by
the audience.
Jack & Jill's:
Defintely one of the highlights from last year's
AVS, we are bringing them back. Jack & Jill's
are the best contests to enter if you have never
competed before, you don't need to sign up with
partner as you will be randombly dancing with
other people. You basically just social dance
with random people to a few different songs.
Some Jack & Jil's have a big range of different
rules and technicalities; we don't.
Format:
- We basically want to see good swing dancing
(wether is 6-count swing, lindy hop, charleston,
Balboa, etc). Anything goes as long as it swings.
Emphasis will be given to proper excution of
moves and maintaing relationship to the music.
- Preliminaries: They will be held in an all-skate
format (everyone dances). Each heat will dance
to three different songs at three different
tempos (slow, medium, fast in no particular
order). For safety reasons, during the preliminary
rounds aerials, lifts and drops are not allowed.
Each contestant will be judged indivudually.
- Finals: They will be held in a battle format.
Contestants will be paired up and judged as
a couple. Each couple will dance to a certain
number of phrases of the song until another
couple comes in. THe first two songs will be
DJ'd and the last song will be done to the music
played by the live band. More instructions will
be given at the competitors meetings.
