Another year, another opportunity to share the music. I enjoyed DJing last night (along with Sara), kicking off the Hot Jam dances for 2007. It was worth recording the BCS Championship game and watching that later.

I appreciate y'all letting me try out some new tunes on you in preparation for my SoFLex sets. I also appreciate the opportunity to honor the late, very great, incomparable James Brown.

My set went like this:

Now You Has Jazz - Louis Armstrong
Miss Jackson - Charlie Barnett & Orchestra
T'aint What You Do - Jimmie Lunceford & Orchestra*
If Dreams Come True - The Swingsations
Four or Five Times - Rex Stewart & Wingy Manone
Duke's Place - Ella Fitzgerald

[Tribute to James Brown]
Night Train - James Brown & the Famous Flames
Papa's Got a Brand New Bag - James Brown
Ain't That a Groove - James Brown

Hep Cat's Love Song - Cab Calloway & Orchestra**
All the Cats Join In - Benny Goodman & Orchestra
Yas Yas Yas - Three Bits of Rhythm
You Hit Me Where It Hurts - Ray Agee
Porter's Love Song - Roy Milton & His Solid Senders
Down By the Riverside - Benny Green Trio
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Sunny Side of the Street - Dizzy Gillespie
Jivin' With Jarvis - Lionel Hampton
Smooth Sailing - Arnett Cobb & Orchestra
Celery Stalks at Midnight - The Big 18
Rock Bottom - Gene Phillips
Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby - Louis Jordan
Till Tom Special - Benny Goodman Sextet f. Charlie Christian
Yacht Club Swing - Fats Waller
Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae
Jesus Gonna Be Here - The Five Blind Boys of Alabama

* Dean Collins Shim Sham tune
** Visitor's Jam

Next!

Time to bump this thread back to the top with my sets from last night. Rachel and I DJed, trading off 45-45-30-30-minute sets. In the first set, I wanted to mark Fat Tuesday with tunes connected to New Orleans (either artists from there or N.O. mentioned in the song). The second set was a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, who founded Atlantic Records in the 1940s, and who signed and recorded many of the great artists we dance to each week.

The New Orleans Set:

Jambalaya Fats Domino
Whirlaway Allen Toussaint
Drop Me Off in New Orleans Kermit Ruffins
It Seems So Long Duke Heitger Swing Band
Old Man River Earl Grant
Life is So Peculiar Louis Armstrong & Louis Jordan
Night Train James Brown & His Famous Flames
Exactly Like You New Orleans Jazz Vipers
Now You Has Jazz Louis Armstrong
Tip On In Slim Harpo

The Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Set:

Teardrops From My Eyes Ruth Brown
Jam Up Tommy Ridgely
Youre Driving Me Crazy Big Joe Turner
Night Time is the Right Time Ray Charles
Beyond the Sea Bobby Darin
A-Tisket, A- Tasket Manhattan Transfer w/Asleep at the Wheel
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Bette Midler
Chain of Fools Aretha Franklin
Funky Broadway Wilson Pickett
Gimme a Pigfoot Lavern Baker
Dont Let the Green Grass Fool You The Spinners
Wailing Interval Duke Ellington

The best-received tune of the night, IMO, was "Jam Up." A great-sounding New Orleans-based jump tune on steroids, it clocks in at a smokin' 220 bpm. Which is still slower than "Whirlaway," which cranks it up to 245 bpm. Yep, we wuz cookin'. Next?

Great themes, Jim.

I'm currently working on a sex, drugs and Lindy Hop themed set.
