Not for Distribution Internal Use Only
SUBJECT: Atlanta Lindy Exchange (ATLX) 4 - April 19 22, 2007
WEBSITE: www.atlx.org
FROM: Alan A. Annicella, ATLX Chairperson
TO: ATLX 4 Board of Trustees Committee
Alright trustees, can someone tell me how this happened? ATLX 3 was THE exchange to attend. And then the other exchange came out with their part three. Were we scared? Ha, not on your life. Because we had a theme. Third times the charm. Bam. Throw in belly dancers, a kick butt Lindy performance with some funny hats, and youve got yourself the vanguard of Southeast Lindy Exchanges.
So, can someone tell me why we havent topped that yet? Lets look at what weve done.
In 2004, at the first ever ATLX, we danced with the devil,
In 2005, at ATLX 2, if you werent there, the joke was on you, and it happened on April Fools weekend, so there you go,
In 2006, at ATLX 3, we sold out of weekend passes one month before the event!
So, why are we sitting around with nothing but a bad drawing of a swing couple? Forget it. Were going to four.
Do I stutter? ATLX 4. Forever. Scratch that, sounds like a perfume advertisement. Four days. Four nights. Four waters per person per dance. Four performances by incredible dancers. Four freakin unbelievably incredible bands. Four to the bar. Yes, there will be a bar there.
I can hear you now. Youre clamoring. Its not possible! We cant add another night! Think of the venues! Our ticket prices will skyrocket! Not on your life. Were adding a fourth night, and we will do our best to ensure pricing does not change a penny.
Four. For now. Forever. Sweet Lord almighty, for swing. Someone strike the music cause were walking the edge here people, and I feel like dancing!
ATLX 4 Four days. Four nights. April 19 22, 2007.

You see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out, is that each one of us is a Lindy Hopper, and a Bal Fanatic, and a Blues dancer, and a Westie, and a giant rock-stepping East Coast swinger. And yes, we will be at ATLX. Does that answer your question?"

Hi All
The ATLX4 planning team is working hard to produce a quality event. We are collectively continuing to work on venue and band contracts. If you are interested in helping as a key volunteer for this event, either post a response to this thread or contact Alan ("Westie Alan").
We plan to have a website launched by January 19 (three months in advance of the event), and also open registration on January 19. The launch date is important because there will be a special registration price for the first group to register. So mark your calendars for January 19 (and tell your friends too ). _________________ Mark Tabladillo

Could you give me an idea as to the schedule?
Particularly I am trying to figure out time off from work and which days to get off for. (I have to do it really far in advance... and I am very limited as to the amount of time away.) _________________ -Aimee |

Hi Everyone
Early registration is over, and we are now into "preregistration". This event will be a big one for our Atlanta lindy scene.
Thanks too to everyone who mentioned wanting to help on this thread. Andrea Burns is our volunteer coordinator, and she just gave me a database of specific ATLX jobs which I will be making functional this weekend-ish. I will need to test it before it becomes active. All these timed jobs will be online, and will involve things like registration desk, set up, clean up, and other duties for specific venues. People who volunteer ten or more hours on these jobs will qualify for full registration (and that fact especially helps the "poor college students").
Alan Annicella leads a smaller group of core ATLX organizers, who are the overall area leaders for the event. The people in these jobs either have previous ATLX leadership experience, or have come to be known through their active role in managing and running other Atlanta events, especially ones run by ASEDA (since ASEDA owns and operates ATLX). Some of this team is listed on the "Contact Us" tab on the ATLX website. I call this core set of jobs "untimed" because they are jobs which require as much time as it takes to get the job done (work until completion).
For all these areas, we have lots of talent among Atlanta-area swing dancers to do all these types of jobs. It has been our ATLX operating philosophy to try -- inasmuch as is possible -- to distribute the work among many people so that none of this becomes too burdensome for any individual or small group of people. Thus, our volunteer challenge has been less about finding people to do undone tasks, and rather to relationally connect groups of people who would like to work together to complete a task. That situation is a strong position, and speaks well to how many Atlanta swing dancers have historically invested their own time and resources to make these types of events happen. Relational connection remains the primary way that important and key jobs get accomplished. (I have more to say about how relational connection relates to the future growth of the swing community in Atlanta, but that discussion is off this topic).
Getting more involved means developing your own personal connections and relationships with people leading specific functional areas. ATLX is not in "urgent crisis" mode of needing heroic volunteer rescue, but instead has come to rely on many people who believe in the cause. These volunteers willingly invest their time to not only get this year's event done but also establish working relationships for other events (including and beyond ATLX). Friendships and more can come from working together, and as an example, I knew Jim Wheatley before ATLX1, but through working together we have come to develop a personal friendship over the years (as Alan and FG saw when we recently went to soflex together).
I will be posting another message here when the volunteer form becomes active on the website. It has been my observation that many jobs go quickly because there are a pool of people wanting to earn full credit with 10 hours of time. For those under the earning model, we are going to require payment up front, and when the volunteer time is done, then ATLX will offer payment back after the event. Andrea Burns will be the one to talk with if you have questions about how this process will work.
What we can all do is tell friends about this event. It's of course behind two other major Atlanta events -- Down South Camp Meetin' (Feb) and Enter the Blues (Mar) -- but don't forget about ATLX in April. _________________ Mark Tabladillo

Hey Mark and/or Westie Alan -
I don't have a major credit credit card, I only have a VISA check card, and I'd rather not enter the account number on the internet. Will an online registration form that can be printed out and mailed with a check be placed on the ATLX.org website, and if so what's the time frame of that happening? Thanks in advance! _________________ David Rothenberg |

Dude-- Are we there yet?
Thanks to everyone who has been so patient with the housing registration. We're still working on the website which I'm sure will be simply cracking once it's completed. Please remember to fill out that form once we get the housing page up. I love all your emails and I try to get as much info as I need from you in them, but I like the form as a back up Dottin' my "i"s and all that.
I simply cannot wait. I'm saving up all my money so I can eat out with everyone since I somehow manage to miss that every year. IHOP in pyjamas, anyone?
Tah!
